Apex Green Roofs builds vegetated roof systems that are designed to meet the precise needs of each project.  Each roof surface is its own microclimate and has specific design parameters.  It goes without saying that you cannot apply blanket solutions to a green roof.  Apex Green Roofs and Roofscapes, Inc. are not married to any particular product.  This allows us the flexibility to deliver the best product to you, and for your roof’s specific needs.  Thoughtful design and care go into each project we construct.

There are several types of green roof systems to meet your project goals and desires.

Extensive Systems
These are the thinnest systems supporting only the toughest plant species.  These systems range in depth from 3” - 6” and do not have irrigation.  Most herbaceous material can’t survive and only succulents, like sedums, seem to thrive.  Your roof will need to support a minimum of 20 pounds per square foot for this type of system.

Price: ranging in price from approximately $9 - $13 per square foot with two years of basic maintenance

Intensive Systems
These vegetated roofs offer a much greater palette of plants from which to work.  Broadly defined intensive systems are anything with over 6” of soil media.  More typically, however, they range from 6” – 12” in depth.  They have two layers of media; a drainage media (eliminating the need for a synthetic drainage layer) and growth media.  Both support the more extensive root systems of the flowering herbaceous plant material.  Often irrigation is included to help the plants through the difficult times of the year.

Price: ranging in price from approximately $13 - $30 per square foot with two years of basic maintenance

Rooftop Gardens
This vegetated roof is probably what most people think of when they hear “green roof.” Rooftop gardens are not technically green roofs. They do not cover the entire roof surface and include recreational space. Perennials, shrubs and even trees can be planted in planters if the structure allows. They provide fewer of the environmental and cost saving benefits of the extensive and intensive systems, but can be more attractive and functional.

Price: this varies greatly depending on the design parameters
